Before you can say what your resolutions are we must first agree on just what do we really mean by a New Years Resolution.

For some it’s a wish list, not much more.

But there are those of us, perhaps 3-10% of us, that have commitment.

A New Years Resolution is NOT something you want to achieve. There are too many of them to fit on a new years resolution list. What we really ought to mean by a New Years Resolution is something you want to achieve that you actually have strong emotional commitment to.

New Years Resolution Tip 2

What are your emotional reasons why?

Commitment comes from emotion. Without an emotional reason why you want something, it just isn’t going to happen for you.

Take ’stop smoking’ for example. Well sure it’s better for your health, less risk of cancer, kissing is better, save money, etc. But if the emotional desire and benefits for smoking outweigh the emotionally felt benefits of not smoking, then you’re not gonna stop.

So on a scale of 1-10, note down a score showing how much desire you honestly emotionally feel towards each resolution.

Measurement helps to make the commitment more real to the mind.

You’re developing clarity. Here you can cross off the list any items that you want, but know that you won’t really be committed too.

Answer these questions for each resolution:

What’s your reward for success?
What essentially is the point of the resolution, why do you desire it?
What will it do for you, what will it give you that you don’t have now?
What’s the emotional benefit to winning with it?

Write all this stuff down, and your commitment and ability to succeed will shoot through the roof.

Clarify and expand on each resolution exactly what success would be, what it would look like, what would exist in reality in your life, if the resolution was 100% complete to your satisfaction.

This takes some time. It’s no good just to write up that list of 10 and file it somewhere.

We need to make it all vivid and real to our awareness. To make it clearly defined, so that we can SEE it, and darn near almost TASTE it. Sweet victory can only follow from good preparation.

You might write half a page or more describing the ideal scenario for each resolution.

So we have a vision for each resolution. How things would be with success. Some people have never done this kind of thing before, and it revolutionizes their successes almost automatically.

From the very beginning it is important to share your objectives and goals with those around you so that you can enlist their support. The nuts and bolts of achieving any resolution are invariably the same. Neither the size of the resolutions nor the person achieving it matters. Successful New Year’s Resolutions consist of the following:

Clear Purpose – For a dream to become a goal, it must be specific. Being thin is an image, losing 10 pounds by March 1 is a true resolution. Be clear on what you want to achieve.

Make a New Years Resolution that you have a real, bona fide intention of keeping. The truth is most people have not made a genuine, serious, no-kidding around- I-really-mean-to-do-this New Years Resolution!

In Writing – Describe precisely what you want, how you will earn it, when you will have it, and the benefits you’ll receive from achieving your resolution. Write the details, but don’t make it complex. When you put it in writing, you increase your chances of moving to the next step and increasing your level of commitment.

Your mind, while blessed with permanent memory, is cursed with lousy recall. Writing your resolution goes a long way towards achieving it.

Commitment – Without commitment, you can say, “Farewell dream. Adios potential. Toodleloo success. Hello Mediocrity!” Your resolution will find a more deserving soul: someone with courage, character, conviction… commitment.

Commitment is not only habitual but also essential – it moves you ever closer to your resolution and ultimate success. Commitment is the heartbeat of your goal.

Accountability Counts – commitment means you own it. You are responsible for taking the resolution that’s on paper and turning it into a desired outcome. Owning it means tasking responsibility for changes, risks, failures, and successes.

If the validation questions show you that this is the wrong resolution for now, start over. Return to your original list, and work through the process once again. It is wiser to focus on the right resolution than to start one you’re not committed to.

Are these reasons powerful enough to motivate you when you are faced with those tricky situations?

Write down your reasons for quitting. You may want to take a look at some of the benefits of quitting.

2. Set yourself a date for quitting. Try and choose a date that will be stress free but when you can find plenty to do to keep yourself busy. Try and set a date within about two weeks of reading this.

3. Ask your doctor for advice. This is especially important if you have health problems or are concerned about issues such as weight gain.

4. Consider finding yourself a quitting partner relatives, work colleagues and friends are a good place to start. Set a date to quit together and you will be able to give each other support.

5. Tell your family and friends about your intentions. Ask them for their support before you quit and explain that you may not be yourself while experiencing withdrawal. When you reach your quitting date rely on those that have been most encouraging for support.

6. Think about starting an exercise program and a sensible eating plan. Again speak to your doctor or dietician. Exercise will give you more energy and help you to relax and relieve stress.

7. You should know what triggers your desire for a cigarette, such as stress, the end of a meal, drinking in a bar, etc. Avoid these triggers while you are trying to quit or if that’s  not possible, decide how you will deal with the triggers.

8. Decide what you will do when you experience cravings. As we’ve discussed deep breathing, a short walk and keeping you self busy will help to take your mind off the cravings. Perhaps you can think of other ways. Write them down. Remember these cravings will only last for 3-5 minutes at a time.

9. If you have tried quitting before maybe you came across a stumbling block which we have discussed such as finding something to do with your hands. If so, you need to arm yourself with a solution to these foreseeable problems. Get yourself a pen, or stress relief aid to fiddle with, if occupying your hands is a problem.

10. Be positive and confident you can quit. You have spent time and energy planning how you will deal with the task ahead by following our tips for giving up smoking. Believe you can and you will do it if you persevere.
